Installation Instructions

FLEXA WOVEN MARINE FLOORING MUST BE ROLLED FACED OUT, CUSHION IN. DO NOT CREASE OR FOLD THE VINYL. A VINYL TO VINYL FOLD COULD WRINKLE THE MATERIAL.

MARINE VINYL FABRIC FLEXA LUXURIOUS FELT BACKING IS DESIGNED FOR COMFORT. IT TYPICALLY LAYS FLAT, WITH NO EDGE CURLING AND STAYS IN PLACE, UNDER MOST FURNITURE. WE RECOMMEND A NON-SLIP PAD OR TAPE/ADHESIVE BE UTILIZED TO HELP KEEP IN PLACE.

Before you cut this material, STOP and check the following:
1. Quality - is this what you ordered?
2. Color - is this the right color?
3. Pattern - is the pattern correct?
4. Size - is the size correct?
5. Visual Defects?

IF MATERIAL HAS BEEN CUT, FITTED, INSTALLED, OR ROLLED/FOLDED THE WRONG WAY, NO ADJUSTMENTS OR CLAIMS WILL BE CONSIDERED FOR ANY OF THE ABOVE REASONS.

Preparing for Installation

1. Goods must be rolled face out, cushion in. Do not crease fabric. All claims and warranties voided if rolled any other way or if the product has been cut, fitted, or installed.

2. Before cutting, check the following: Product Quality, Color, Style, and Dimensions.

a. Product’s weave may not run parallel to the cut edge. Due to the fabric’s weaving process, some wave, bow, or skew is normal. Tolerance level is 1.5” in either direction.
b. It is normal for some patterns to exhibit light or dark shading. This shading can be more evident at seams where two pieces of the same style meet.
c. Product must be inspected prior to installation. Installation of material implies acceptance. Marine Vinyl Fabric LLC is not responsible for removal or reinstallation cost.

3. Product must acclimate on site for 48 hours at 65°F – 85°F prior to installation

4. The Marine Vinyl Flooring is 102” wide and has trimmed edges. The edges WILL NOT fray if left exposed.

II. Preparing Floor for Installation

1. For outdoor recreational applications, floor must be smooth, clean, flat and dry - no dirt, dust, wax, glossy paint, or any other foreign material. Uneven surfaces should be sanded smooth or filled until the surface is completely flat, clean, and dry. Non-wood floors must be fully cured, structurally sound, and free of curing or parting agents. Glossy or metallic surfaces should be sanded to dull the surface.

2. If floor is made of multiple wooden planks, ensure that the entire floor is level and that there are no gaps or unfilled space between planks. Joints between planks should be level and smooth. It looks best when installed on a completely flat surface.

3. Approved Substrates: APA Grade Underlayment Plywood, Association Grade Particleboard, Cork Underlayment, OSB, Concrete, Recycled Rubber

a. Substrate must be smooth, clean, level, dry and free of dust, dirt, grease, oil, paint, curing compounds, incompatible sealers, fire retardant chemicals, release agents, or any other foreign substance that might interfere with a good bond. Subfloor must be smooth and fully adhered. Depending on the type and condition of the subfloor, mechanical treatment may be necessary, such as, mechanical brushing or grinding with coarse sandpaper. It is the sole responsibility of the installer/contractor to ensure that the concrete surface is properly prepared prior to installation. See ASTM F710-11 Standard Practice for Preparing Concrete.

b. It is necessary that the installer inspects the substrate for cracks or low spots. Apply a cement-based patch compound 24 hours prior to installation. The compound is then sanded and vacuum cleaned.

c. Check floor for hydrostatic pressure and high relative humidity readings in the substrate. Moisture levels of concrete must be below 10 lbs. per 1000SF (According to ASTM-1869 Test Method) and 90% RH (Tested in accordance with ASTMF-2170.) Installation

III. Installing Flexa Woven Marine Flooring on Floors

1. Standard practice is to unroll the woven vinyl and let it relax for 24 hours. This method ensures best adhesive transfer.

a. Product should be laid flat and opened for up to 30 minutes before applying to the floor. This method ensures best adhesive transfer. A 100% transfer of adhesive onto the felt backing must be obtained.

2. This product has a felt back and must be installed using an adhesive that works with felt and for the appropriate indoor or outdoor substrate application. For outdoor applications, adhesive should also be nonflammable and freeze-thaw stable. For additional security, it can also be stapled down to wooden surfaces, applying staples along the edge. Simply be careful using staples because if a staple does not go in all the way it can harm someone not wearing shoes.

3. Adhesive should be applied with a dry paint roller or trowel to the floor only. If a trowel is used, ensuring proper trowel notch will achieve a 100% transfer of wet adhesive to felt. Check with the preferred adhesive manufacturer for the correct trowel size.

a. Recommended adhesives using 1/16 x 1/16 x 1/16 square notch trowel Taylor Resolute AAT 290 (Indoor/Outdoor) AAT390 (Recreational Outdoor) ECO 811 (Indoor) ECO420 (Outdoor)

b. Allow adhesive to develop tack before placing the woven vinyl. Do not allow the adhesive to dry or develop a skin. Pull woven vinyl back periodically to check for proper adhesive transfer.

4. Installations for all products installed with adhesive must be rolled for proper glue transfer with 35-50 lb. floor roller. Hand roller can be used for smaller installations.

a. All installations require bubbles and air pockets to be smoothed out with non-sharp edge board from center pushing to the edges to ensure felt has made good contact with the floor. Use scissors or razor knife to trim edges.

b. Please note due to the weaving process, some bow and skew may be expected. Keep these variations in mind when seaming.

5. Trim on a flat surface with a straight edge, using a new razor blade for each cut. Always cut product from the face side of the fabric. Dull blades may damage the product or produce rough edges. Clean cuts allow for reduced seam visibility; however, woven vinyl installations typically show seams.

6. For projects requiring a seam in a room setting, mark and snap a straight line on the substrate for the placement of the seam. The number of seams should be reduced to a minimum. Avoid placing seams that are located near entrances.

a. Avoid cross seams and “T” seams if possible
b. Use caution not to crease the material.
c. It is important that the installer spend time working with the seams both in width and length for the best appearance. Lay all the rolls in the same direction before making any cuts

7. Seams need to be aligned with the pattern or texture prior to cutting. A seam can be double cut or straight edge cut. Note: If the pattern is a stripe design do not double cut, cut next to the stripe from the face with a new sharp blade and straight edge. The first drop is laid to the straight-line mark on the floor. Then, the second roll drop, after matching the design, butt to the first drop.

a. Double cut from the face only, with a sharp new blade and a straight edge. Overlap the second strip with the first strip, double cut, and smooth out firmly. If the material has a pattern, make sure the overlap matches the pattern before cutting. The roll drops are overlapped in a parallel way before cutting. Care must be taken to avoid damaging the subfloor. Excess trimmed edge should be removed from the floor and seam closed within one hour. Repeat for each seam.

8. A seam sealer for vinyl is recommended (Mannington MSS-20 or ECO 2285.)

a. All seams must be cleaned, and any dust and adhesive removed.
b. Use masking tape on both sides of the seam to keep sealer off the face of the woven vinyl.
c. Apply a small bead of seam sealer on the seam.
d. Use a seam roller to flatten edges at seams. Seams will be visible using woven vinyl.
e. Allow seam seal to cure without traffic for a minimum of 24 hours.

9. Clean up any wet adhesive with soapy water. A soft bristle brush can also be used. Blot dry with a clean towel and be sure to wash any other surfaces clean of adhesive. Dried adhesive should be removed with an adhesive remover.

10. Traffic for 24 hours after installation should be limited. The glue and seam sealer should be completely dry and hardened before normal foot traffic.

a. Once the installation has been completed, the surface should be protected, particularly if the area is to be used by other trades during final finishing.

Cleaning Instructions

HOW TO CLEAN YOUR FLEXA WOVEN MARINE FLOORING

One of the best ways to keep your fabric looking good is to vacuum and/or hose fabrics off on a weekly basis. This helps prevent dirt from becoming deeply embedded in the fabric and eliminates the need for more vigorous cleaning. In most environments, a thorough cleaning will be required as soiling dictates. When it’s time for thorough cleaning, it can be cleaned while installed.

General or Light Cleaning

● Brush off or vacuum loose dirt.
● For outdoor applications, use a water hose to wash away dirt and stains.
● If needed, prepare a solution of water and mild soap such as dishwashing liquid or household cleaner.
● Apply a small amount of water and soap mixture to dirty area.
● Use a soft bristle brush to clean.
● Rinse thoroughly until all soap residue is removed.
● Air dry.
● May not require re-treatment depending on the soiling level of the fabric.

Heavy Cleaning for Stubborn Stains and Mildew
Flexa Woven Flooring does not promote mildew growth; however, mildew may grow on dirt and other foreign substances that are not removed from the fabric. To clean stubborn stains:

● Prepare a solution of 1 cup bleach and ¼ cup mild soap per gallon of clean water.
● Apply small amount of bleach and soap mixture.
● Blot stain with a sponge or clean towel.
● Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue.
● Air dry.
IMPORTANT Remember to protect the area around the area you are cleaning if using a bleach solution. Other fabrics may have an adverse reaction to the bleach.

Professional Cleaners
In evaluating the services of a professional cleaning firm, you should inquire about a firm’s experience in working with Flexa Woven Marine Flooring.

Helpful Hints
Always rinse the flooring thoroughly to completely remove bleach. Please be aware of the environment. Bleach can have harmful effects on the natural environment around you. We do not advise using bleach if you are surrounded by a body of water. Flexa Woven Flooring should only be allowed to air dry.

How Much Do I Need To Order?

  • Depending on which flooring you order the answer will vary
  • 3 feet is 36" long by 102" wide depending on which one you select
  • 10 Feet is 360" long by 102" wide
  • etc.

Many people ask us "should we order an extra foot"?

  • If you are confident in your measurement you do not need the extra foot. If for some reason you need 17.5 feet you will need 18 feet of marine flooring.

Simply select the style you need. This item is sold by the running linear foot. A linear foot of marine flooring is 12" long, but the width will always be 102" wide. For example 2 linear feet would be 24" long by 102" wide. In the space provided above enter the number of feet desired in the quantity field. Lengths are sold as continuous feet in one piece. Installation Instructions

Installation Instructions

Marine Vinyl Fabric PVC Marine Vinyl is designed for installations on wood, aluminum or fiberglass surfaces. The product is adhered to the surface using either MD–101 (for wood applications), or MD–102 (for aluminum fiberglass applications) adhesive. The instructions below describe a typical installation.

Read through the instructions completely prior to beginning your installations.

Suggested Tools List

  • Measuring Tape 9”
  • Medium Nap Paint Roller With 4’ Extension
  • Scissors
  • Push Broom or Linoleum Roller
  • Utility Knife
  • Throw Away Rags

Surface Preparation

Ideally, it is best to remove any objects that are attached to the boat floor. Also remove any plastic or metal trim pieces. These will be reused to secure the edges of the vinyl after application. The removal of all seating, tables, trolling motors and electronic devices, etc., will allow for an easier and better application of the Marine Vinyl Fabric product.

Any existing carpet or vinyl will also need to be completely removed in addition to any adhesive residue left on the surface to be covered. It is very likely that wood boats decks (pontoons) will require the complete removal of the existing wood surface and the replacement with new wood.

Marine Vinyl Fabric recommends ¾” pressure treated plywood or marine grade plywood screwed to the structure. Consult Marine Vinyl Fabric if another surface is required. Install new wood securely with high quality moisture resistant screws. Plywood sheets should be butted against each other leaving no more than a 1/32” space.

Wood Surface Application - MD-101 (water-based adhesive) - 1 surface application

**DO NOT SEAL THE PLYWOOD: If your wood surface is sealed with a water-proofing sealant, then MD-102 (solvent-based) adhesive must be used. The water-based adhesive must be applied to a porous surface for the membrane to adhere properly.

**For MD-102 (solvent-based adhesive) please refer to Aluminum/Fiberglass surface application instructions.**

Prior to applying the vinyl, inspect the surface of the boat to be covered to make sure all debris, saw dust, screws, or any foreign objects have been removed. Use a leaf blower or broom at this time to insure the surface is completely clean.

Be extremely careful when unwrapping the roll. Sharp objects can damage the Marine Vinyl Fabric vinyl. Take caution in removing the packaging to avoid damage to the product.

After the packaging has been removed, unroll the vinyl over the surface to be covered. Take this time to determine that the roll is of sufficient length to cover the surface required. Center the vinyl on the surface and adjust for appropriate overhang requirements on all four sides. Pull out any wrinkles or folds in the vinyl if they exist.

Once the vinyl is adjusted to the ideal position, install a couple weighted objects (i.e., tool box, adhesive pail, brick) on the membrane at one end of the boat. The weighted objects should be within 24” from the edge of the boat. Starting at the opposite end of the boat, roll the membrane loosely back to the weighted objects. As you roll the vinyl, try to maintain a straight and consistent roll.

Wood surface applications require the use of MD–101 adhesive. Prior to opening, shake the glue container slightly for 60 seconds. The glue should have the appearance and consistency of Elmers glue/thick white paint. Coverage rates for the MD-101 are approximately 125/SF per gallon. Depending on the ambient temperature, the adhesive will begin to dry relatively fast after application. If you are working alone, do not try to install more than 15 linear feet at a time. The vinyl needs to be applied when the adhesive is wet.

Open the container and pour the adhesive in a serpentine pattern onto the wood deck in front of the roll. The serpentine ribbons of adhesive should be approximately 1.5” wide. Cover an area that extends the width of the roll and out form the roll 15’. Using the medium nap paint roller, roll over the adhesive blending it together and completely covering the wood surface. The consistency and coverage of the adhesive should represent a heavy coat of paint. Do not leave puddles of adhesive or dry spots on the wood surface. Finish the area of adhesive application in a relatively straight line across the width of the boat.

Standing on the vinyl near the weighted objects, slowly and careful begin to unroll the vinyl over the freshly applied adhesive. Make sure that the roll is unrolled straight and wrinkle free. If a wrinkle does appear, lift the roll of vinyl off the adhesive slightly and straighten to remove wrinkle. Continue to unroll the vinyl to cover all of the adhesive.

Take a clean stiff bristle push broom and sweep over the surface installed using medium pressure. The process will help distribute the adhesive under the vinyl evenly and help provide for consistent contact between the adhesive and vinyl. Make sure any air pockets are pressed out if they exist.

Return to the beginning of the roll and remove the weighted objects. Fold the vinyl back exposing the un-adhered wood surface. Apply adhesive as described above and follow same vinyl application procedure.

The remaining vinyl (or next 15’) can now be adhered to the wood surface. Make sure the new application of adhesive slightly overlaps the previous to eliminate voids in the coverage. It is acceptable to separate the adhered vinyl from the initial adhesive to ensure 100% coverage as long as the vinyl has not dried. Complete the application as described above.

Drying Time

You can walk on the vinyl immediately after installation. However, excessive walking and foot traffic could put small wrinkles in the vinyl. Take caution in walking on the surface and always inspect the area after contact. In dry weather conditions and temps 60 – 90 degrees F. the glue will be dry in 2-3 hours. It is recommended that the glue be allowed to dry completely over night before installing seating and equipment.

Aluminum/Fiberglass Surface Application - MD-102 (solvent-based) - 2 surface application

Prior to applying the Marine Vinyl Fabric vinyl, inspect the surface of the boat to be covered to make sure all debris, dust, screws, or any foreign objects have been removed. Use a leaf blower or broom at this time to insure the surface is completely clean.

Fiberglass surfaces will likely require that the surface be etched using a coarse grade of sandpaper. This will allow for better adhesion. Remove all fiberglass dust prior to applying adhesive.

Follow the package removal instructions as listed above.

In most cases, applications over aluminum or fiberglass require pre-cutting the vinyl into the appropriate shapes and sizes required for the specific area of the boat. Carefully measure the shapes and sizes allowing for appropriate coverage. If a larger surface is to be covered, utilize the same installation method described above using the appropriate adhesive and procedures outlined below.

MD-102 is very flammable. Keep all adhesives away from children and do not use this product near an open flame or high heat. MD-102 should be installed in a well-ventilated area.

Once the sizes are cut, apply MD-102 solvent adhesive to the non-woven polyester backside of the vinyl using a small nap paint roller (smaller areas may require the use of a 3” roller). Coverage rates for the MD-102 are approximately 50-60/SF per gallon. Be careful not to get adhesive on the topside of the vinyl. Removing spilled or excess adhesive is extremely difficult. Then apply a thin coat of MD-102 adhesive onto the surface to receive the vinyl piece. Again, be careful in the application. Only apply enough adhesive to be covered by the vinyl. Allow the adhesive to set for 10-15 minutes.

**Note: If you apply the adhesive too thick, you may notice air "gas" pockets under the vinyl after approx. 24 hours. Please do not attempt to remove the vinyl and do not seal the edges. These "gas" bubbles will go away. If possible, move the boat into the sunlight. This will speed up the process of allowing the gases to "escape" and the material will lay flat. Depending on ambient temperature and amount of excess glue, this process can take 2-3 days.

The adhesive is ready for application when you can touch the adhesive on the aluminum with your finger, and feel only a slight tackiness. If “legs” or “strings” appear between your finger and the adhesive, allow another 5 minutes to dry and retest. Do not wait longer than 15 minutes to apply the glued vinyl to the glued surface.

Carefully apply the glued piece of vinyl without wrinkles or air bubbles. MD-102 is a solvent based contact adhesive and will require quick installation. Make certain the vinyl pieces are positioned correctly before applying. After the piece of vinyl is applied, use your hand to smooth out any air bubbles or wrinkles while ensuring uniform contact.

Follow the same instructions for subsequent pieces of the vinyl.

Seams

It is possible to overlap the vinyl and create a seam although exposed seams should be avoided as much as possible. In pre-cutting the vinyl pieces, try to utilize pieces of vinyl that will hide the seams under overhangs, under seats or aligned with the seams in the aluminum. You can also butt seams by performing a “wall paper cut”. Over lap the two pieces of product then, following the edge of the top vinyl, use a sharp utility knife to cut through the bottom vinyl. Fold the top layer back slightly, remove the trimmed piece of bottom vinyl, and then, fold the top layer back in place to butt the vinyl.

HOW TO CLEAN YOUR BOAT FLOOR

For general maintenance, we recommend washing your floor at the end of each season before stowing your boat for the offseason. Make sure the boat is completely dry before butting the boat away for the off season.

CLEANING

  1. Use a mild dish soap in warm water with a soft bristle deck brush
  2. Rinse the floor thoroughly after scrubbing.
  3. For ground in dirt, mildew, or minor stains, try Orange Glo, Citrus Magic or Simple Green cleaners.
  4. Spray the area that is stained with the cleaner and let it soak for about 10 minutes before using a paper towel or microfiber towel to wipe up the area.
  5. AVOID IF POSSIBLE - For tougher stains, you can try CLR or Tilex DO NOT allow these cleaners to sit on your floor for an extended length of time. Rinse the sprayed area well a few times to make sure it is completely rinsed off .
  6. BE SURE THESE CLEANERS DO NOT GET ON SEATS OR CANVAS AS THEY WILL CAUSE DAMAGE.
  7. Regardless of which cleaner you choose to use, carefully read each cleaner’s instructions and recommended use.
  8. Minimize potential damage to your flooring by testing harsher cleaners on a concealed section of your boat floor before using the cleaner on a more obvious section of the floor.
  9. If unsure, contact the manufacturer and ask if the cleaning product is safe to use on vinyl.
