How Big Is a Yard?
Not sure how much material to order? This page explains the difference between a linear yard and a square yard, and gives you a simple calculator for each — so you order the right amount the first time and don't pay for waste.
Linear Yards vs Square Yards
What's the difference? Use the visual guides and calculators below to figure out which one you need.
Understanding the difference helps you order the right amount and avoid waste. Below you'll find a plain-English explanation and a working calculator for each.
Square Yard Calculator
Use this when you're covering a flat surface — flooring, carpet, turf, or wall-to-wall vinyl.
- Measure your area — length and width of the surface, in feet.
- Multiply length × width — total area in square feet.
- Divide by 9 — because 1 square yard = 9 square feet.
- Round up — to the nearest whole number for cuts and waste.
Linear Yard Calculator
Use this when buying material off a roll — fabric, marine vinyl, upholstery. The roll has a fixed width; you choose the length.
- Know your roll width — commonly 54" or 72".
- Measure your project — length and width in inches.
- Fits the roll? — narrower than the roll = one strip; wider = multiple strips side by side.
- Round up — order whole yards for a working margin.
📐 Multiple strips: a 24"×80" bench on a 54" roll → 80" needs 2 strips → 1.34 yd → order 2 yards.
Which One Do I Need?
Use SQUARE yards for
- Flooring — tile, hardwood, carpet
- Artificial turf — pads, landscaping
- Wall-to-wall vinyl — full room coverage
- RV skirting — the whole perimeter area
Use LINEAR yards for
- Fabric & vinyl rolls — upholstery, marine vinyl
- Trim & binding — ribbon, tape, weatherstrip
- Linear projects — runners, upholstery strips
- Anything sold by the roll
Quick reference: yards → length (our material is 54" wide)
